 Pediatric Dentistry Treatments

Comprehensive Dental Check-up for children
Routine evaluations monitor your child’s oral development and allow us to pinpoint concerns when they’re smaller and easier to address. We recommend an exam at least twice a year beginning at age 1.
Preventive Care and Dental Restorations
Preventive care and dental restorations focus on maintaining oral health and addressing issues to restore your smile’s function and appearance. It includes regular cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, fillings, crowns, and other restorative solutions tailored to your needs.
Sealants
Dental sealants are preventative covers that block out cavity-causing bacteria in the deep grooves on back teeth. A sealant only takes a couple of minutes to apply; we recommend them on all permanent (adult) molars, which erupt around the ages of 6 and 12, respectively.
Fluoride application
A professional fluoride treatment after your child’s cleaning helps remineralize weak enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay and sensitivity.
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for arrest of caries
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a safe and effective treatment used to arrest cavities in children by stopping the decay process. SDF helps prevent further damage and promotes healthier teeth when applied directly to the affected area.
Fillings
Primary (baby) teeth can decay at accelerated rates, allowing the cavity to spread into the nerve or adjacent teeth. Our conservative white fillings repair the area of damage and help stop the spread of infection. Composite fillings are both mercury-free and attractive.
Crowns
Protective crowns (sometimes called “caps”) preserve compromised, broken, or badly decayed teeth and prevent premature tooth loss. We provide stainless steel crowns and tooth colored zirconia crowns for our Pediatric patients.
Endodontic Treatments for Children
Endodontic treatments for children are designed to save a damaged or infected tooth. Treatments include pulpotomy, where the infected part of the pulp is removed, and pulpectomy, which involves removing the entire pulp to preserve the tooth’s structure and function.
Pulpotomy
An abscessed tooth can be extremely painful and a risk to your child’s health. Gentle pulpotomies combined with crowns can preserve your child’s tooth until it’s ready to be replaced with the permanent one.
Pulpectomy
Pulpectomy removes the entire pulp from a severely decayed primary tooth, followed by cleaning and sealing the root canals. This procedure helps preserve the tooth's structure and function until the permanent tooth comes in.
Apexification and apexogenesis for young permanent teeth
Apexification and apexogenesis are specialized treatments for young permanent teeth with incomplete root development. Apexification promotes root formation through materials like calcium hydroxide, while apexogenesis encourages continued natural root development for long-term tooth health.
Dental cleaning
Preventative cleanings every six months keep your child’s smile fresh and clean. Our hygienists will educate your child on ways to care for their teeth and gums between checkups.
Interceptive Orthodontics
We assess your child’s oral development, jaw anatomy, and eruption patterns to pinpoint concerns that might develop into problematic issues once they get older.
Habit breaking appliance
Habit-breaking appliances help children stop harmful habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting. These appliances gently encourage healthier oral habits, preventing future dental problems and promoting proper tooth development.
Space maintainers
Space maintainers help preserve the space left by a lost baby tooth, ensuring proper alignment of permanent teeth in children. These devices help prevent misalignment and crowding by guiding the eruption of the adult teeth.
Space regainers
Space regainers correct the loss of space caused by premature tooth loss, allowing for the proper eruption of permanent teeth. These devices help guide the movement of teeth and prevent misalignment or crowding as the child grows.
Expanders
Expanders are devices that widen the upper jaw to correct dental and bite issues. This treatment helps create space for crowded teeth, improves alignment, and can reduce the need for future orthodontic procedures.
Crossbite correction
Crossbite correction involves using braces, expanders, or other appliances to reposition the teeth and jaw for proper alignment. This process helps improve bite function, prevent tooth wear, and promote oral health. It is important as it prevents uneven wear on teeth, jaw discomfort, and potential speech or chewing difficulties. Addressing a crossbite early can also improve facial development and prevent more complex orthodontic treatments in the future.
Myobrace
Myobrace is an orthodontic appliance that helps correct poor oral habits and align the teeth by encouraging proper tongue posture, lip function, and nasal breathing. This treatment can reduce the need for braces, improve facial development, and promote healthier teeth and jaws in children.
dental surgery
Dental surgery in kids addresses more complex oral health issues, such as removing impacted teeth or treating severe dental trauma. These procedures are carefully planned to ensure minimal discomfort and promote proper healing for a healthy, functional smile.
Tooth extraction
Tooth extraction is often necessary for children when a tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or causing alignment issues. This procedure helps prevent further dental complications and ensures the proper development of permanent teeth.
Exposure of delayed eruption of teeth
Exposure to delayed tooth eruption in kids involves a dental procedure that helps bring a permanent tooth into position when it is not emerging properly. This treatment ensures the tooth erupts correctly, preventing alignment issues and promoting healthy oral development.
Treatment of Trauma to primary & permanent teeth
Treatment of trauma to primary and permanent teeth in children involves immediate care to stabilize the injured teeth and prevent further damage. Timely intervention helps preserve the teeth, reduce pain, and ensure proper healing for healthy future dental development.
Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry helps kids relax and feel comfortable during dental procedures, ensuring a stress-free experience. This approach is safe and effective for anxious or fearful children, allowing necessary treatments with minimal discomfort.
Conscious sedation
Conscious sedation helps kids remain calm and relaxed during dental procedures while remaining awake and responsive. This safe and gentle method ensures a comfortable experience for children who may feel anxious about dental treatments.
Treatment under General Anesthesia for complex cases
Treatment under general anesthesia for complex cases in children ensures they are comfortable and relaxed during extensive dental procedures. This approach is ideal for children with severe anxiety, special needs, or those requiring multiple treatments in one session.

Your Child’s First Exam

Both our pedodontists and orthodontists recommend early intervention, beginning with children’s dental screenings at a young age. Pediatric Dentists and dental experts recommend bringing your child in for a dental exam by age 1, or when their first tooth erupts (whichever comes first.)

During your child’s first visit with our kids’ dental specialists, we’ll perform a thorough evaluation of their oral development and screen for risk factors. Older children may need to be checked for issues such as tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, or atypical speech patterns.

Our pediatric dentist will tailor the appointment to your child’s comfort level. If they’re cooperative and comfortable, we may be able to go ahead and complete a cleaning (on older children) and take a few small X-rays to evaluate tooth development.

We visited Dr. Joy Dental Clinic for a dental emergency with our toddler, and the doctor was very kind and professional. They quickly identified the problem and resolved it without causing my little one any distress. The only reason for 4 stars is that we had to wait a bit longer than expected, but the care and attention we received were worth it. I highly recommend their pediatric services!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At what age should I take my child to the dentist for the first time?

It’s recommended to take your child to the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth eruption. Early visits help establish good dental habits and detect potential issues.

  • Why are baby teeth important if they eventually fall out?

Baby teeth are crucial for speech development, proper chewing, and holding space for permanent teeth. Healthy baby teeth also guide the eruption of adult teeth and help avoid alignment issues later on.

  • What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to reinsert it gently or keep it moist in milk or saline until reaching the dentist. For a baby tooth, contact your pediatric dentist for guidance on the next steps.

  • How can I help my child stop thumb sucking?

Encouraging your child to stop thumb sucking can be done by using positive reinforcement, offering gentle reminders, and providing distractions like a favourite toy. If the habit persists, your pediatric dentist can recommend a habit-breaking appliance.

  • What is the best way to prevent gum disease in children?

Preventing gum disease in children involves regular brushing and flossing, a balanced diet, limiting sugary foods, and routine dental visits. Teaching your child proper oral hygiene habits from an early age plays a key role in maintaining healthy gums.

  • Is it safe for my child to get braces at a young age?

Braces may be recommended for children as young as 7 if there are issues with the alignment of the teeth or jaw. Early orthodontic evaluations help guide dental development and can sometimes avoid more complex treatment later.
