Your Child’s First Exam
Both our pedodontists and orthodontists recommend early intervention, beginning with children’s dental screenings at a young age. Pediatric Dentists and dental experts recommend bringing your child in for a dental exam by age 1, or when their first tooth erupts (whichever comes first.)
During your child’s first visit with our kids’ dental specialists, we’ll perform a thorough evaluation of their oral development and screen for risk factors. Older children may need to be checked for issues such as tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, or atypical speech patterns.
Our pediatric dentist will tailor the appointment to your child’s comfort level. If they’re cooperative and comfortable, we may be able to go ahead and complete a cleaning (on older children) and take a few small X-rays to evaluate tooth development.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
At what age should I take my child to the dentist for the first time?
It’s recommended to take your child to the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth eruption. Early visits help establish good dental habits and detect potential issues.
-
Why are baby teeth important if they eventually fall out?
Baby teeth are crucial for speech development, proper chewing, and holding space for permanent teeth. Healthy baby teeth also guide the eruption of adult teeth and help avoid alignment issues later on.
-
What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to reinsert it gently or keep it moist in milk or saline until reaching the dentist. For a baby tooth, contact your pediatric dentist for guidance on the next steps.
-
How can I help my child stop thumb sucking?
Encouraging your child to stop thumb sucking can be done by using positive reinforcement, offering gentle reminders, and providing distractions like a favourite toy. If the habit persists, your pediatric dentist can recommend a habit-breaking appliance.
-
What is the best way to prevent gum disease in children?
Preventing gum disease in children involves regular brushing and flossing, a balanced diet, limiting sugary foods, and routine dental visits. Teaching your child proper oral hygiene habits from an early age plays a key role in maintaining healthy gums.
-
Is it safe for my child to get braces at a young age?
Braces may be recommended for children as young as 7 if there are issues with the alignment of the teeth or jaw. Early orthodontic evaluations help guide dental development and can sometimes avoid more complex treatment later.
-
How can I prepare my child for their first dental visit?
Parents can help children feel comfortable by explaining the dental visit in a positive way and avoiding words that may cause fear, such as “pain” or “injection.” Reading children’s books about visiting the dentist or role-playing a dental visit at home can also help reduce anxiety.
-
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes, dental X-rays are considered safe for children when performed with modern digital technology. Pediatric dentists use very low radiation levels and protective measures such as lead aprons to ensure your child’s safety while helping detect cavities or dental issues that may not be visible during a regular examination.
-
What are dental sealants and why are they recommended for children?
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They help prevent cavities by sealing the small grooves where food particles and bacteria can easily accumulate, making them an effective preventive treatment for children.
-
How does thumb sucking affect a child’s teeth?
Prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use beyond early childhood may affect the alignment of teeth and the development of the jaw. Pediatric dentists can monitor these habits and provide guidance to help children gradually stop if it begins to impact their oral development.
