What are the type of dental crowns?

They rarely chip or break and can endure the wear and tear of long term biting and chewing. They are generally used for the molar teeth and rarely for the front teeth as its color is a disadvantage. Porcelain-fused-to-Metal: Made up of a metal base with a porcelain coating, these crowns can be matched to the color of the adjacent teeth, allowing for a more natural look. One of the disadvantages is that the porcelain from the PFM crowns can chip off when you bite on very hard foods.
All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain : These crowns provide the best natural color match than any other crown type. Their high aesthetic quotient makes them a good choice for the front teeth. They are also preferred for people with metal allergies.
The Procedure.
The first appointment will be a consultation for the assessment of your teeth with the Dentist or Prosthodontist.
If your teeth require a crown, the dentist would administer local anesthetic if your tooth is vital.
Your dentist will then file down your tooth into a smaller version of itself. The shape of the prepared tooth helps to ensure the crown’s retention and stability.
An impression or a scan is made of this tooth preparation and is sent to the dental lab to make the permanent crown. It is important that the dental lab technicians are very skilled to ensure that the crown is made aesthetically to match your neighboring teeth.
A temporary crown is made for you to wear until you receive your permanent crown. In about a week you should receive the permanent crown which will be cemented on your tooth
To ensure your crown lasts for a long time, avoid biting on very hard food like nuts, opening the bottle cans. If you clench or grind your teeth, you should wear a mouth guard at night to protect your teeth and the crowns. Brush and floss regularly to prevent further decay and gum disease.
How long will my crown last?
Crowns last on average 10 years and even longer if you maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth daily and visiting your hygienist or dentist for a cleaning and check up every 6 months.
