What is the procedure of getting dental implants?

Share

Dental implants have revolutionized the way we treat missing teeth, making them the most popular option for patients requiring restorative dental work.  So, if you are suffering from severely decaying teeth, missing teeth or you wear a full or partial denture, then Dental implants can be an effective solution to restore your smile to its original form.

As dental implant technology has evolved, the procedure has become more efficient and reliable for both doctor and patient.  By using advanced 3D scanners and digital planning software, placing dental implants using minimally invasive techniques allow patients’ to be treated in as little as a single day and with the highest success rates.

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is surgically placed into the missing tooth’s socket.  This little screw then fuses with the jaw bone and mimics the natural root of a tooth.  As the implant heals, the screw becomes a sturdy base to support artificial teeth, such as a crown, and will give a patient the same look and feel of their natural teeth.

What is the procedure of getting dental implants?

During the consultation, there is an in-depth evaluation process.  You will have a comprehensive dental exam where x-rays and 3D imaging models are created in order for the Implantologist to analyze your teeth, jaw bone and the supporting structures of your mouth.

Depending on the quality of the bone, the dental implant surgery can vary.  Your Implantologist will be the one to explain your situation and determine exactly how to proceed by taking into account your unique circumstances.

During dental implant surgery, if you have severely damaged or decayed teeth, the first step is to carefully extract them in order to make room for the implant.  If your tooth has already been extracted during previous treatment, your Implantologist will proceed with placing the dental implant into the missing tooth’s socket.

Immediately after the dental implant surgery, a temporary crown is made on the very same day and placed over the dental implant.  All patients will wear this temporary crown for upwards of three months in order for the body to heal around the dental implant, and the new titanium root will fuse with the bone in your jaw bone.

After the healing time has passed, you will be asked to come in and have your permanent crown fitted and will walk out with a fully functioning, natural looking tooth.

Why get Dental Implants

Dental implants are seen as the most advanced and effective method to replace missing teeth, as they look natural, feel comfortable, are long lasting and reliable just like your natural teeth.  Because of these advantages, dental implants offer excellent long term value over other dental treatment options and are an investment in your long term oral health.

It is important to keep in mind that the entire procedure takes place over a few months until your jaw has healed completely.  If during this time you feel any pain or discomfort, your doctor will be able to help you manage it with prescribed medications.

The procedure of getting dental implants is lengthy but many patients enjoy the more natural appearance and the stability provided by dental implants.
