Children’s Back-to-School Checklist for Healthy Teeth

It’s almost September, which means your little ones are getting ready to go back to school for another year of learning and growth! As your family prepares for this exciting time, we wanted to give you a quick checklist that will help prepare your children for a mouth-healthy school year!

Below is a list of 5 dental tips to help you and your child get back into a routine:

A Fresh Toothbrush

Did you know that a child’s toothbrush should be replaced every 3 – 4 months?

General use wears down bristles and limits their effectiveness over time, especially if you notice the bristles fraying at the ends from vigorous brushing. For this reason, a toothbrushes lifespan can be shortened, meaning a replacement may be necessary more often. The Back-to-school season is the perfect time for a new toothbrush that will keep your child’s teeth clean until around winter break.

Create a Consistent Brushing Routine

By creating a consistent brushing routine, you are teaching your child one of the strongest tactics in oral health. Consistency is key and a brushing routine is a perfect way for children to learn the importance of brushing and flossing daily.

You can help your child establish a mouth-healthy routine by having them brush their teeth once in the morning after breakfast for two minutes, and a second time at night just after dinner with the use of dental floss. Make sure you teach them to floss the tough-to-reach areas of their mouth as well!

A Dental Health Checkup

A dental health checkup it the best way to get a clear understanding of the specific issues (or non-issues) present in your child’s oral health. Our Pediatric Dentists will evaluate the state of your child’s oral health, and provide actionable advice that will improve their oral health, and give them a healthy leg-up on their school year!

Carry a Reusable Water Bottle

Besides staying hydrated, water helps strengthen and clean teeth. As water has zero calories, it helps restore the mouth’s pH balance to fight unhealthy levels of acid. With every sip, water cleans your child’s mouth by ridding it of any leftover foods or acids that may be stuck throughout the day and helps wash away bacteria and sugars that can eventually lead to cavities.
If your child’s school allows it, a water bottle is a great way to ensure that your child stays adequately hydrated while at school!

New Mouth Guard

Does your child plan on playing sports this year? If yes, it may be a good idea to get a custom made mouthguard to protect their teeth from injuries. One of the most common injuries in sports are facial injuries and many can be made less severe with proper protection like a mouthguard. If your child decides to play sports this year, get them a custom mouth guard to help them keep their teeth stay safe!
